The ultrasound scan is currently considered to be a safe procedure for evaluating the fetus. It is non-invasive, accurate and cost-effective. It has progressively become an indispensable obstetrical tool and plays an important role in the care of every pregnant woman.

The main uses of ultrasonography in obstetrics include:

1) Diagnosis and confirmation of early pregnancy, 2) vaginal bleeding in early pregnancy, 3) determination of gestational age and assessment of fetal size, and 4) diagnosis of fetal malformation.
