Stereotactic breast biopsy is a specialized radiologic procedure utilizing intersecting coordinates to pinpoint an area of tissue change previously detected on mammogram, but not felt on physical exam. Using a hollow needle to pass through the skin the radiologist obtains tissue for examination by the pathologist. At the same time the biopsy is being obtained, a metal clip is left in the breast to mark the area in question to assist with future care.
